Spoiler Alert Thursdays: Killing Jack Bauer
This week’s post discusses 24 and Tom Goes to the Mayor. It is somewhat half-hearted, as I did not watch much TV this week and there wasn’t much on anyway, but it does have a couple good Mr. Show clips.
24: Well, at least we got a genuinely surprising cliffhanger this episode. Everything else ranged from stupid to morally bankrupt. As my roommate remarked, “Has it always been this amateurish?”
Tom Goes to the Mayor: I watched the first disc of this on DVD, and I have to say — it takes some time to get into it, but it does have a significant cumulative effect. Since Bob Odenkirk is involved and since it shares the same “purposely lame” atmosphere, it’s natural to think of Mr. Show, and I think that TGTTM is actually more consistent than Mr. Show, though lacking in truly transcendent moments so far. What can top the pre-recorded call-in show, for instance? It’s so good, I’m going to embed it:
Or here’s “Monster Parties: Fact or Fiction?,” which actually sucks as a whole but contains perhaps the greatest moment in the series [NSFW]:
