The power of prayer

David: did you hear that focus on the family were encouraging folks to pray for rain for obama’s address at the convention?
Adam: I did.
Adam: Thankfully, prayer doesn’t work.
David: Yeah, that’s saved my ass more than once.

  1. The whole pray for rain thing reminds me of the political convention in the old testament where the Jehovah party had a stand off against the Baal party and each prayed for fire from heaven. Maybe they would be better off praying for fire to burn the place down. . . ?

  3. Again I hate evangelicals. I mean the fucking theology of this is all off on so many levels. Not least that God isn’t a democracy, if he gets enough votes he doesn’t just say (New York accent) “well, thats it, we’re over the threshold – they almost didn’t make it but that guy in Kansas prayed real hard. Ya betta get down their angels and suspend the laws of the physical universe and the whole eco-system to make sure the most substantially Christian candidate in this election gets rain the day of his speech. You know, the people have spoken.”

  4. Aren’t there people somewhere — in Africa, in this country, hell, probably in parts of Denver and the surrounding area — that might need prayer, or food and shelter, or debt relief or something? Isn’t it more important to help those people and pray for them than it is to pray for something that may or may not lead to a defeated Obama; I mean, in the spirit of “WWJD” and all that? As important as this election seems to be, I can’t imagine that it even registers on a scale of theological importance. I don’t understand how that group can claim to be even nominally Christian. Whatever. (Good thing prayer doesn’t work, I guess.)

  6. If you liked “Pray for Rain”, you will love the new parody video: Pray for Diarrhea.

  7. It’s somewhat hard to believe that Obama doesn’t have a backup plan, maybe even an entire backup speech, in case it rains.

  8. A follow-up — I just looked at the weather report for Denver, and it has the probability of rain at literally 0% today. That will of course make it even more miraculous if the Lord grants Dobson’s wish.
