So, um, about Obama’s eating habits

Thank God Maureen Dowd is on the case. As it turns out, Obama is apparently setting a bad example by eating unhealthy food sometimes when he should be promoting nutrition. She exhorts him to eat “some steamed fish with a side of snap peas” next time he takes celebrities out.

Yet a rational person might look at Obama’s behavior and conclude that he’s setting the perfect example: eating healthy for the most part, indulging on special occasions. Nothing would make eating healthy more unappealling than telling Americans they need to completely cut out their favorite foods and overhaul their diet from the ground up. Acknowledging that people enjoy unhealthy food and making it an occasional indulgence rather than a norm respects human nature, avoids setting everyone up for failure, and probably even increases people’s enjoyment of the less-healthy-but-still-awesome option when they do eat it. Everybody wins. Except me, because I wasted my time reading that stupid column when I should know better by now.

  1. I always think that blogging will someday make people like Dowd irrelevant now that everyone has a podium to make meaningless observations.

  2. Meanwhile Meghan Daum wants Obama to smoke more.

  3. There was an article somewhere else recently saying that his food choices are too upscale and healthy and that he’s setting a bad example *that* way.

  4. Now she has a whole column about how Obama killed a fly.
