Tuesday Hatred: Odisse odientibus est esse

If you’re seeing this, then I hate that I never got around to writing the hatred this week. Don’t worry, though; I still exist.

  1. I hate Latin.

I suppose it would be more fair to say that I hate knowing little more than the smatterings of Latin (quid pro quo, carpe diem) that one picks up merely by dint of running in “educated” circles. I feel like ben is taunting me an my kind with his Latin subtitles; I feel like he is saying, “You’re ignorant, aren’t you?”

I hate not getting in-jokes, even when they are not funny.

  2. It’s not really an in-joke. The title means “to hate, for haters, is to be”; it’s a play on a more familiar (er, to some) Thomistic/Aristotelian formula.

  3. nice and thoughtful post!
i hated my neck pain yesterday so much, but it got cured overnight, was trying to find a comfortable position before sleep and moving my neck little by little and then it sounded tag-tag-tag, momentary relief! ibuprofen aided too i guess
i was to ds ms already

  4. I hate that I’ve been sick in some form or another for a week now. The latest form of this is a vestigial congestion in my head that makes it just a little difficult to sit and concentrate. I kinda like that I’ve stayed indoors for a week though.

  5. I hate that I, too, have been sick. I hate that being sick fills me with self-pity and self-deprecation.

  6. Aside from the need to continually pay them, I hate the following things about my student loans:

    • the fact that chunks of them were sold off against my will, with the result that my loans (all of which originated from the same lender) are now owned by three different companies
    • the fact that two of said companies have changed their loan servicers in the last two months

It appears that they will stop at nothing in their quest to make it impossible for me to keep track of my student loans.

  7. I hate non-responsive fax machines at places where I seek employment. Also, I hate fax machines in general, as they hardly ever work.

  8. I hate the fuzzyheadedness that follows a night of insufficient sleep, especially if I try to go without caffeine—a substance my dependence on which I also hate. I hate how much sleep I require.

  9. I hate the inevitable caffeine crash — the stronger the coffee, the more devastating the landing.

  10. I hate that I lost all of the script pages I wrote yesterday when Preview crashed and Force Quit didn’t work, so I had to shutdown manually. I hate that Celtx doesn’t recover files.

  11. I hate that the fucking printer driver seems to have forgotten my preferred settings again, resulting in this paper being printed on approximately twice as many pages as was necessary because duplexing wasn’t turned on.

I hate Supporting Online Material and its similarly named cousins.

  12. I hate that I emit the odors of a man who should have done laundry two days ago.

  13. I hate the phrase, “digital download”–is there any other type!? I also heard the phrase “internet blog” today. Again, is there any other type?

  14. I hate the final leg of sickness — finally having broken through and feeling basically recovered, but also a little stir-crazy. You want to enjoy your health, but you also don’t want to push too hard and wind up collapsing into another day of sickness.

  15. My blog is a blog of the mind, Craig.
